New report - Downpatrick Community Excavation

A community-based archaeological investigation was undertaken in a triangular paddock to the north-west of Holy Trinity Cathedral, Downpatrick Co. Down (within the Scheduled Area of DOW 037:027) during the summer of 2018. The paddock is known as the ‘Tennis Courts’ and appears as such on the 3rd edition revision of the Ordnance Survey map of the area. Two trenches were manually excavated to investigate archaeological features previously encountered during the filming of Channel 4’s Time Team programme in 1997 (under the direction of Nick Brannon formerly of the Environment Heritage Service – now Historic Environment Division: Department for Communities). The 2018 investigation was requested by Down County Museum and funded through the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programme Body (SEUPB). Read full report… P4ArchDig-_0019_temp_(1).jpg
