Launch of PEACE III Funded Book and Townland Map
05 May 2011
The community history project organised by Down County Museum and the Somme Heritage Centre and funded by PEACE III will continue until the end of June. Over the past year the project has resulted in a number of books, exhibitions, films and other materials being produced by participating groups and on 14 April the Friends of Down County Museum will launch two publications, a book on farming in north and east Down and a map/poster of townlands around Strangford Lough.
The Friends of Down County Museum have been taking part in the PEACE III funded community history project and during the year members of the group have been on study trips to the Ulster Museum, Down County Museum and the Somme Heritage Centre. They have visited Early Christian and archaeological sites in the area and sites associated with the 1798 rebellion and some have attended a 10 week course in Irish history. They have also been working with two historians, Jonathan Bell and Mervyn Watson to bring together a book on memories of farming life in the area. Farmers from Lecale and the Ards were interviewed about their experiences of farming today in comparison with farming in the past 4 decades and the result is a highly informative and lively account of how farming continues to be, not only a key industry and employer in the area, but continues to be a vital contributor to local society and culture.
The Friends have also been busy producing a map of the townlands around Strangford Lough. The resulting poster contains information on the origins of townlands and and their names with details of how to research your own townland. Townlands are unique to Ireland and many local people in this area are interested in their preservation and continued use.
The book and map have been supported and funded by the PEACE III Programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body and delivered by the North Down, Ards and Down Council’s Cluster. Copies will be available for collection at the museum.
